Daily Captivity (2018)
Chiayi Old Prison was built in 1919 in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period. It served as a prison until 90s and turned into a museum in 2011. After becoming a museum with a clean environment and white walls, its initial appearance disappeared along with the time. Now we can only have a glimpse of the past from the displays.
This series was created during a workshop during the course of three months. I was fascinated by the contradiction between its past (prison) and present (museum). Because of its wooden windows and floors, it’s hard to imagine this place was once a prison. As a museum, it is clean and tidy, while the nature of jail is still palpable.
